My Inspiration to Beetle Racing
Were it not for my uncle Will, I could never have fathomed about car racing. But he was an avid racer who scored many accolades during his years. And, apart from his success in racing, he inspired me to too become a racer.
He his remembered for the numerous racing events that he took part in, some as far as Copenhagen and Scotland both of which he won. Those may be ages ago, but as I grew up, he used to tell me tales about the events and many more hence triggered my love for the sport.
However, even though in my youthful days I had a car of my own, I never took part in any racing event. Partly due to the fact that I never owned a car which would be admissible in a racing event and more importantly because I was born a school boy and whenever the races were scheduled, I must have been stuck somewhere in college or in our local library doing some research or reading.
My First Racing Event which made me Realize my Talent
Actually, I never even attended any racing event even as a spectator till my last year in college. During that summer I had been too much overwhelmed by school work and really needed some space. My first instance of the space that I had been longing much for was to visit my uncle in Bedfordshire, England. It was during the visit that I came to know about an upcoming event of Beetle racing in Santa Pod. The way my uncle narrated the event to me made me feel its importance and eventually got me interested in it.
I wanted to be there as a spectator but my uncle teased me that he could help me register and take part in the event. There was a lot that I couldn’t fathom like where to get the best car or how to adequately prepare for the event. I tried expressing my concerns and he promised that if I was ready, he could take care of that all.
Since the dead day for registration was almost, my uncle suggested that we first register and afterwards we could take care of other logistics which were needed. That is how I registered for the event in the summer of 2007. At times in the evenings he would make me watch some racing events and kept encouraging me that I could make it; I only had to believe in myself.
Becoming a Third Runner Up in the Santa Pod Beetle’s Race
The beetle that my uncle gifted me because it was one of its kinds; it had a high horsepower and the capability to accelerate very first. During the day of the event I was well prepared and all set. The race started at 9 in the morning and attracted some 48 competitors. I was determined to do my best given the confidence that my uncle had shown in me. I never wanted to disappoint him.
Therefore I did all my best and my best time was 9.21 while averaging 150 miles per hour. As much as I was pressurized by other participants, I managed to clock a good time for an amateur like I was and eventually becoming the third in the events.
That saw my start to a new lifestyle which to date I have successfully participated in. I may not have achieved as much as I uncle did but I believe that one day I might surpass him in his glory.
