Race Was Terrific in My Black Current #3
The Nostalgic Bugjam, 2009
If there is anything; which makes me proud and gives me the satisfaction that I usually crave for, then it is participating in outdoor events. I don’t necessarily need to be the winner, possibly not even in the runner up’s list. But I derive pleasure being in the competition. More so in a competitive event where there are gurus and veterans who give me more challenge than I ever anticipated.
Such was the case in spring 2009 when I registered to participate in the Bugjam event, riding my Black Current 3 beetle. Of course I never anticipated to win; the beetle couldn’t hit even the 100mph speed rate. All in all I had adequately prepared for a debut in for this eccentric race.
Support from my Local VW Sports Club was Key to My Success
Well, I don’t know where I should start telling it all. Maybe I should start by commending a local Volkswagen Club in my area; which amazing supported me all through the registration as well as the preparation for the race. Actually I feel that I know the fantastic event to the managerial team of the club because of their efforts and immense support even though my sports car seemed incompetent for the race.
However, I must also state how the amazing support I got from the club members who went out to cheer me during the event contributed to the efforts that pushed me all along to the finish of the race. The girls must have been more impressive because their impact was widely felt and resulted to the numerous stories; which were published on the local dailies about the event and my triumph.
My Beetle Never Lost the Race, It Actually Made Me Proud
Although my beetle; which I had worked on to make her race-worthy disappointed me a little bit, everything went on as I had planned. I don’t fault her though. This was because it was the first race of her kind. She tried her best. Maybe with some more tweaking and working on; she will be more impressive next time.
On the other hand, the race started well and my beetle seemed to obey all the race rules. I would agree that she acted as if she had a higher engine capacity because she could pick very well and kept with the pace dramatically. As a matter of fact, I tried all my best; I did all what I could to ensure that I never lagged behind in the 26 participants events. Actually a few miles; less than five to the finish line I was on the 12th position.
This made me more confident and helped me keep on the mounting pressure and thus just a mile to the finish line I was on the 5th. I continued with my pace. But a few yards to the finish line, my beetle refused to respond to the gear changes and I ended up in the 7th position.
All in all
Nonetheless, I must agree that the race was terrific and electrifying and that the beetle didn’t let me down as much. Maybe it needed some changes that I never put into consideration. But otherwise it made my day.
